Welcome to Asian ABS Academic Forum (AAAF)

Mission

– Promote the implementation of ABS (Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-Sharing)
– Promote international research and development of genetic resources
– Promote bioeconomic innovation using biodiversity

History

The entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1993 initiated the concept of Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-Sharing (ABS).
This was followed by the adoption of the Nagoya Protocol at COP10 in Nagoya in 2010, which entered into force in 2014.
Asian countries are rich in biological resources and there are already many successful examples of the use of biodiversity.
Bioeconomy-based innovations that utilize biodiversity and genetic resources should be further accelerated.
There is an international demand to promote the distribution of genetic resources and to share their use globally.
To meet this goal, Dr. Tanit Changthavorn, Deputy Director of BEDO, Thailand,
proposed the ‘Asian ABS Academic Forum’ as an idea to build a pan-Asian network.

On 24 October 2023, the ‘Asian ABS Academic Forum – ABS Symposium 2023 -‘ was held in Tokyo.
At the symposium, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Bhutan, Cambodia, Viet Nam, Malaysia and South Korea
made presentations on the status of ABS implementation in their respective countries.
There were also panel discussions and Meet the Speakers Time, which provided an opportunity for direct interaction between the audience and the speakers.
