AAAF 2024 Bangkok Asia ABS Academic Forum 2nd Symposium

ABS Support Office, NIG, Japan, in collaboration with Biodiversity-based Economy Development Office, Thailand (BEDO)  will organize AAAF 2024 Bangkok Asia ABS Academic Forum 2nd Symposium on 19-20 November 2024.

1. Asia ABS Academic Forum (AAAF)

The entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1993 initiated the concept of Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-Sharing (ABS).This was followed by the adoption of the Nagoya Protocol  at COP10 in Nagoya in 2010, which entered into force in 2014. Asian countries are rich in biological resources and there are already many successful examples of the use of biodiversity. Bioeconomy-based innovations that utilize biodiversity and genetic resources should be further accelerated. There is an international demand to promote the distribution of genetic resources and to share their use globally.
To achieve this goal, Dr. Tanit Chanthavorn, Deputy Director-General of BEDO, Thailand, proposed the ‘Asia ABS Academic Forum’ as an idea to build a pan-Asian network. The first symposium was held in Tokyo, Japan, in 2023 and attracted many participants.
The second symposium will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, a country rich in biodiversity, and it is BEDO who hosts the symposium. Asian countries will report on their national procedures, best practices and initiatives on ABS and discuss the promotion of the bioeconomy in Asia. If you are interested in genetic resources and the bioeconomy in Asia, please come and join us in the beautiful city of Bangkok.
